Netflix brings local storytelling from around the world on one platform, one could say that we tell humanity’s ever-evolving story, one ‘skip intro’ at a time. In the year that extraterrestrial life was being widely discussed, we thought… if there is life beyond this planet, they would watch Netflix to see who we are. And that’s the story we told during the world’s shared moment, The Tokyo 2021Olympics.

An alien story about humanity

Robert Strombert, Avatar’s director, brought this vision to life in a spot that was localized for 27 countries, with content that represented the region.

Extraterrestrials, are you still watching?

For the first time in history, Netflix expanded its audience beyond planetary confines. We transmitted five Netflix stories into space from Area 51, Nevada, giving aliens a front-row seat to humanity. In partnership with a SETI Institute award-winning astrophysicist, we translated Netflix stories into… well.. alien language and broadcasted them to the Kepler-160 system, home to potential Earth-like planets.
